Former NFL Football Star Jamar Chaney Is A Member Of Phi Beta Sigma

Did you know that Jamar Chaney is a member of Phi Beta Sigma? Chaney pledged the Theta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. at Mississippi State University.

Jamar Antwon Chaney is a former American football linebacker who is currently a Florida Gators’ coaching staff member. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted him in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Chaney has played for the Falcons, Broncos, Eagles, and Raiders.

After retiring from the NFL, Chaney was on the coaching staff at his alma mater, St. Lucie West Centennial High School. He went 11-8-1 and led the team to its first playoff appearance in seven years.

In 2019, Chaney became the Assistant Director of Player Personnel for High School Relations for the Florida Gators football team. He currently is the Assistant Coach – Linebackers / Defensive Recruiting Coordinator for the Florida Gators.

Julia Carson, the First Black Person to Represent Indianapolis in Congress, Was a Soror of Zeta Phi Beta

Did you know that Julia Carson, the first woman and the first African American to represent Indianapolis in Congress, was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.?

Julia May Carson represented Indiana’s 7th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1997 until her passing in 2007. She was the first woman and the first African American to represent Indianapolis in Congress. In addition to being the second African American woman elected to Congress from Indiana, Julia was the grandmother of André Carson, who succeeded her after her death.

Carson was named Indianapolis Star Woman of the Year in 1974 and 1991, and she was inducted into the Indiana Public Schools Hall of Fame in 2006.

In 2014, a memorial bust honoring her in the statehouse was unveiled, and she was also remembered during Indiana’s Women’s History Month in 2015.

Former Florida U.S. Congresswoman Carrie Meek Was A Member Of Delta Sigma Theta

Were you aware that former U.S. Congresswoman, Carrie Meek, was a member of Delta Sigma Theta? Meek pledged the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Florida A&M University in 1946.

An educator and elected official, Carrie Mae Pittman Meek was a United States representative for Florida’s 17th congressional district from 1993 to 2003. In the 1992 primary, she was elected to the United States Congress without an opponent, making her the first African American since the Reconstruction era to do so, and she worked for the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged.

In 1946, Meek received a degree from Florida A&M University (then known as Florida A&M College for Negroes). Because African Americans were not admitted to graduate schools in Florida at the time, Meek enrolled at the University of Michigan and received her master of science degree in 1948.

After the University of Michigan, Meek became a teacher at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida and later at her alma mater, Florida A&M University. In 1961 she moved to Miami in 1961 to serve as special assistant to the vice president of Miami-Dade Community College. The college was desegregated in 1963 and she is credited for her integral role in the administration of the college during the push for its integration.

Meek was granted honorary degrees from a variety of institutions, including Florida A&M University, University of Miami, Barry University, Florida Atlantic University, and Rollins College.

She died at her home in Miami on November 28, 2021, at the age of 95
